Unionized workplaces are safer – fact. That’s because trade unions won’t let workers put their lives at risk to meet production targets or save the company money.

NUJM has an incredible network that spans the world. Global trade unions, like IFJ (International Federation of Journalists) and the guidance of the ILO (International Labour Organisation) , which counts over 600 trade union affiliates in 140 countries,

Membership Benefits

Currently, there are over 500 members.
Membership of the NUJ is open to all professional and working journalists aged 18 and above, provided their workplace is located in the states of Peninsular Malaysia. However, journalists employed by the government may only be admitted as Associate Members.

Working journalists also include photographers or creative artists involved in newspaper, magazine, or news agency work, who are part of the journalistic staff and fully dependent on their journalistic work. However, this does not include proprietors, directors, or individuals who hold the power of employers in appointing or dismissing journalists.

  • Membership of the Union shall be open to all working and professional journalists who are employed by radio, television, foreign governments, film organisations, commercial firms and other similar establishments and whose place of work is in the States of Peninsular Malaysia, provided that no journalist employed by the government shall be admitted to membership except as an Associate member. For the purpose of these Rules, working and professional journalists also includes photographers or creative artists engaged in newspaper, magazine or news agency work, who are members of journalistic staff, and who are wholly dependent on their journalistic work, provided always that they are not persons who are proprietors or directors or exercise the powers of employers in the appointment and dismissal of journalists.


  • Membership of the Union shall also be open to all working and professional journalists who are employed by radio, television, foreign governments, film organisations, commercial firms and other similar establishments and whose place of work is in the States of Peninsular Malaysia.


  • Associate membership shall be open to all working and professional journalists who have the power of employers in the appointment and dismissal of journalists, and journalists employed on a part time basis by the organizations and establishments as set out in 1 (a) and 1 (b) above.
